Solar FAQs
How does solar PV work?
The ‘PV’ stands for ‘photo-voltaic’ – these are the cells on the solar panels that generate electrical current from sunlight. The panels are made up of several layers of PV cells along with semi-conducting material.
When light shines onto the PV cells it generates direct current (DC). This flows into the inverter, which converts it to alternating current (AC). The inverter connects to your consumer unit or fuse board, and the current goes into the home to provide solar electricity.
How do I know solar will be worth it?
Our team carry out a thorough survey of your property to tell you the potential returns from solar.
We take into account the size and shape of the property, its roof direction, roof pitch, and its position in relation to the sun. We also check out the surroundings, wind speed and direction, and potential shadowing from nearby trees or buildings.
If you decide to go ahead our technicians will design a system to generate maximum electricity for your home, helping you to get the most from your solar installation.
What are ‘SEG’ payments and can I get them?
Solar often generates a higher amount of electricity than can be immediately used in the home. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) government scheme will pay you for every unit of unused electricity that you feed back to the grid3.
Do solar panels work well in the UK?
Yes, UK solar generation compares favourably against many other countries. We have high levels of annual sunshine, moderate temperatures, UV, low pollution and cooling winds.
We provide a realistic projection of what your solar installation could produce throughout the year.
How are solar panels fixed to roof? Can they cause damage?
We always conduct a survey prior to works to ensure suitability of any roof or building.
We typically fit solar panels on rail systems that are mounted and fixed to the roof. We use the latest fittings which are designed to maintain the strength and integrity of the roof whilst being watertight.
Is installation disruptive?
We work to minimise disruption, this includes ensuring your power is off for a very limited time when we connect up and commission the system.
Scaffolding is required for safety, and most work takes place outside your home.
Solar installation is straightforward and usually takes 1-2 days, depending on the roof and the size of the solar panel array. Planning permission is not usually required.

2The value of SEG payments will depend on your energy provider, tariff, where you live, and your energy use. As of August 2024, it’s around 22-35p for every kWh (kilowatt-hour.)
325-50% estimated saving is based on average energy consumption. Each household will have a different potential for savings. A home energy survey will give a more accurate projection.
