The 10th to the 16th of February has been National Apprenticeship Week, where we recognise the achievements and progress of apprentices across the UK, and the importance of learning hands-on skills that can be used later in life.
On why apprenticeships should be celebrated, Faye Rivers, Head of People & Talent at InstaGroup, said:
“Everyone learns differently, so knowing that there are alternatives to the more ‘traditional’ education routes is incredibly valuable for people looking to begin new careers. Apprenticeships offer defined pathways and provide a wealth of depth and exposure to broader learning, setting people up for professional development with tangible experiences and structured progression.
“Apprenticeships aren’t just for those in early-years careers, but offer an organised learning environment for anyone looking to take a new journey in an environment that fosters growth and can provide expert-level support.”
This year, as the theme of the week is ‘skills for life’, we have been speaking to some of our apprentices about their experiences, what they’ve learned, and the skills they’ll carry with them after they complete their program.
Kyle, Business Management apprentice
“Through my CMI Business Management Level 5 apprenticeship, I’ve developed a range of skills that I know will stay with me for life. The most impactful has been improving my communication and adapting my language depending on the situation. This has been invaluable when handling difficult conversations with customers, especially in the challenging climate created by recent funding crises in the energy sector.
“Beyond that, the apprenticeship has transformed my mindset, helping me better understand the reasoning behind key decisions. This has allowed me to provide stronger support to managers and contribute more effectively to the team.
“I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Liz, our Energy Services Director, who saw potential in me and encouraged me to take this course. Her belief in my growth has been truly motivating, and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity.”
Jacob, Plumbing apprentice
“My apprenticeship is great because I get hands on experience working with tools and learning about plumbing and heating systems.
“It has also improved my work ethic and my ability to learn and overcome problems.”
Lena, Customer Service apprentice
“My apprenticeship has helped me understand the ins and outs of a successful business and has given me the confidence to feel like I can progress within InstaGroup.
“During my apprenticeship at InstaGroup I have received lots of support all across the business and I have been able to turn to many people for support and advice not just in my team.
“Having this opportunity has been educational as well as hands on, it has offered me the chance to develop my skills in a real-world setting. I have been able to learn the ins and outs of customer interactions and communication techniques while gaining a deeper understanding of the customer service industry as a whole.
“I have enjoyed the contrast between work and college the most, being able to go to college and meet new people and learn new skills makes me feel like I’m not missing out on any experiences while still working on my future career. I wouldn’t want to be doing my apprenticeship anywhere else!”
George, Electrician apprentice
“This apprenticeship has improved my problem-solving skills through hands-on experience with electrical systems and equipment, enabling me to tackle challenges more effectively.”
